New Life Stage, Different Organizational Needs

This garage wasn’t overly cluttered for this empty-nest family because it wasn’t crowded with bikes, sports equipment and toys. But it wasn’t organized or set up to do home projects.

Organize to Optimize sorted, contained, and assigned the items to zones so items could be located quickly. The homeowner will invest in a cabinet to store his tools and create a workspace for home projects. A slatted wall system will also be purchased to hang garden tools and keep the floor clutter free. I provided these great tips before they purchase any organizational products:

A. Record the garage’s dimensions, such as:

  1. Size and location of windows
  2. Doors
  3. Switches receptacles
  4. How much space your vehicles takes up

B. Then decide on a home for your items.

  1. Group items that are use together, such as all cleaning supplies should be stored close to one another.
  2. Put bulky equipment like upright toolboxes and shop vaccums where they won’t get bumped or knocked over by your car.
  3. Place frequently used items, like outdoor toys, close to the garage door.
  4. Store rarely used items in the harder-to-reach spots.
